How it started

How it started

1. This story dates back to March 2021 when “Vijay Shekhar Sharma” the CEO of “Paytm” showed his interest in Tesla electric cars and paid a pre-booking amount of $1000.

Not Only him

Not Only him

At that time, not only he but also many other Indian EV enthusiasts paid for pre-booking amount of the Tesla Model 3 in India.

Every thing was fine but...

Every thing was fine but...

During that period, there were high chances that Tesla will launch its electric car in India very soon.

Things Changed

Things Changed

But as time passed the conditions changed, and as per the recent circumstances it’s hardly expected that Tesla will ever launch their car in the Indian market.

Here's Why

Arrow

The main reason

The main reason

The main reason behind tesla’s failure in India is, “Government policy”. The Indian government imposes a 100% tax on completely imported automobiles.

Tesla doesn't fit India

Tesla doesn't fit India

Tesla is already a luxury segment carmaker and after 100% tax, the most basic model of Tesla will cost around 60 lakhs INR. That is way ahead of purchasing power of avg. Indian.

The Manufacturing plant

The Manufacturing plant

Unless Tesla set up their manufacturing plant in India, Tesla won’t be able to sell their car in India in lucrative margins.

But the catch is

But the catch is

The Indian government asked “Elon Musk” to manufacture their cars in the Indian market, as it’s globally the largest market with more opportunity.

But the catch is

But the catch is

But Elon ignored it and transferred their Indian workforce to the Middle east and decide to set up the manufacturing there instead of in India.

So, he Hate India, Right....

So, he Hate India, Right....

Nevertheless, does it concludes that Elon Musk hates India? Maybe not.......

Let's make Assumptions

Let's make Assumptions

Let’s assume Elon took his chance and invest in India there are still very less chances it’ll be successful in India due to the price barrier.

India isn't ready yet

India isn't ready yet

The mass Indian market is not yet ready to put big money into electric vehicles and the emerging Tata Motors will be the head-on competition for Tesla in India.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Therefore, with this we can conclude that due to business purposes Elon didn’t invest in India, but he shouldn’t ignore the market size in India.
