This article at a glance:
Having an electric vehicle will always be super comfortable for riding and will save you a lot of money, you don’t have to worry about Petrol charges and you will get rid of those costly and time killing monthly servicing. But, assuming that each part of an EV is super robust may take your EV back to the service center for a long time.
Battery is the heart of any electric vehicle; it supplies power to the whole vehicle and without a battery no EV can exist. So, as a human it’s important to give special care to our heart the same applies to the electric vehicles, the more care is taken the longer it will run. However, the precaution and safety measures are mediatory to follow. So, in this article we will be discussing the methods which can bring your EV a long battery life, and proven way to maintain your battery health good.
Mistakes which can reduce the life span of battery in your EV:
There are some common mistakes which majority of EV users do, which eventually leads to reduce their battery life, some of them are listed below:
1). Taking the battery to elevated temperature, is the most common mistake of many EV users and things get even worse when the battery is fully charged or at high voltage. When a battery is exposed to high temperature it excites the chemical reactions taking place inside the battery and unwanted excessive chemical reaction will eventually decrease the battery life.
2). Avoid using old batteries, as a battery which is older than at least 2-3 years will have to face effects like loss of rated capacity, frequent rise in temperature while using it, less charge acceptance, high internal resistance, lower voltage and high self-discharge.
3). Not, using the battery frequently. A battery must be on charge/discharge cycle if not then it may cause a permanent loss of the battery capacity.
4). This is the most unheard point but also a very serious issue. Charging your battery at its 100% capacity and using it at an elevated temperature, this can drastically reduce the battery life of your EV. In general, when we charge the electric vehicle the battery temperature rises which is natural and there is no issue with that, but the problem arises when we start using our battery right after charging it. And elevating the battery when it’s at its 100% capacity is dangerous than anything else. In such cases the battery may even explode, if the vehicle is driven at its full speed. You can easily relate it with the laptop, it’s been used while charging an allowed to heat up while the charging at 100% which leads to reduction in the battery life.
5). Doing deep charge discharge cycle. Basically, a li-ion battery in your electric vehicles made up of so many li-ion cells, which you may have used in TV remotes or clocks. Now there is a myth around the EV users that if the battery is not drained completely, each cell inside the battery may remain unused and its life cycle will decrease. Which is completely false, there is a BMS in each battery which ensure that each cell has been charged or discharge completely. And deep discharging may cause, an internal circuit lock if the Voltage is dropped lower than 2.5V and appear as a complete break down of battery.
How to avoid fast declining of battery life in your EV:
Just taking care of the few things can give your battery a better life. If you want to achieve a good health for you EV battery just do the things below:
* Keep the battery at a cool place
* Use the battery which is at most 6-7 months older than the date of purchase.
* Keep using the battery frequently, and don’t store for a long time.
* Practice partial charge discharge cycle, it will improve the battery backup and give long battery life.
Tips to increase the life span of your electric vehicle battery:
Don’t overcharge the EV
Don’t store your battery for a long time, keep using it regularly.
Avoid charging the battery till 100% (if possible)
Avoid rash driving if the charging is low.
Avoid using the EV right after charging it till 100% (if possible)
Avoid taking the battery to elevated temperature
Monitor the self-discharge an ideal battery will reduce 5% of its capacity in 24 hours (if charge 100%) by itself. After that 3% every week, if this is not the result of your observation than your battery is much older.
FAQs in battery of electric vehicles:
If in case you are required to store the battery at regular interval make sure the temperature of the surrounding is not more than 38’C and the charging of the battery is not more than 40%.
The straight answer to this question is ‘No’. It is recommended by the expert to charge the battery slowly and with a constant power. However, the need of people doesn’t meet with this recommendation, so “fast charging is fine if done twice a month.
Avoid this if possible, practicing partial charge discharge cycle will increase the battery life in your electric vehicle.
Fitting a solar panel is a trending idea these days especially in India, and there are many startups emerging, making heavy profits by fitting solar panels on electric rickshaw. But how this affects the battery of an e-rickshaw here is the full article talking about this topic so, click here to check it out.
Well this is not a big concern but charging a huge battery till 0-100% of its capacity, may hurt the battery when it’s reaching near to 100% because it is dangerous the keep the battery at elevated temperature when it’s full of its capacity.
